We partnered with HomeAway to share from our years of family roadtrips, great ways to save and find awesome places to stay.
One of the best ways a family can spend time together, while also experiencing something new is with a trip and vacation. By disconnecting ourselves from the daily grind of the daily world, we can get out of our area or box and just relax and focus on all the world has to offer. I love to plan out a trip for us all and to surprise the family with a family road trip!
We plan several trips a year so I am always getting and figuring out where to visit throughout the year by asking small hidden questions. This could include asking for instance “what would you think about visiting Death Valley, wouldn’t it be neat cause its an insanely hot desert?” Then have a conversation about facts of it. Or maybe “wouldn’t Disneyworld be fun to visit, I saw a commercial that made it look fun” and just play it off. This way I can gauge their interest and plan to their likes. I don’t want my kids to be unhappy on any trip, makes for no fun and that is the point of a family getaway, to have fun and make memories!
One of the most important parts of planning a trip is booking our rooms. When we take a trip, we plan for more than just one destination. There is so much to see and visit, it’s all about searching. Sometimes I have my kids get on the computer and search for places to checkout in certain locations. Gets them learning and helps me find places to visit.
Using HomeAway is a great way to find more than just a hotel, motel, or resort. You can rent for a day or days, and choose from a wide range of varying condos, homes, even castles!
Properties vary with price of course, so finding something affordable for the night is easy, but also finding something to really remember is possible. The other great things about getting say even a condo with 1 bedroom is just the extra space and amenities. Depending on the location many have pools, golf courses, and more.
The benefits to a vacation rental are more than just the amenities but the living size and space. While we try to find the best deal we still demand a decent level of quality, that can of course accommodate a family of 5. So with a vacation rental many times a kitchen is there and traveling as a family can require a budget just for daily food.
I also like to include the kid’s preference and approval while booking and looking. One thing that will always sell them on a place is a pool. Also somewhere that is close to the places we are going to be seeing is good because they get tired of all the driving which is understandable on road travel.
Check out this fun survey of kids on their wants from a vacation rental.
“According to a recent survey of 540 parents and kids (ages 6 to 18), many kids get to make decisions on the vacation activities (77%), the itinerary (53%), and even the destination itself (49%). Read on for the most kid-requested vacation accommodations.”
While that is not much a surprise, not to me, what were unique were the choices of homes. Some include the tree house, the shell house, an airplane, tipi, train, and more. Check out this fun list of favorite and unique properties.
When we recently traveled to the Grand Canyon, it was difficult to find anything other than a hotel. While some had kitchenettes, many at the time were booked. HomeAway would have been perfect to find some place that would accommodate us and be affordable, while also providing choices.
HomeAway has more than one million listings of family vacation rentals throughout the world. This includes 190 countries and of course every US state. With the ease to rent an entire home, this is a great way for families to travel without being split up. With a HomeAway vacation rental you can get up to twice the space of not more for half the price of a hotel room making them perfect for groups and extended families.
