The Tempest – Blu-ray Review

We were provided a copy of ‘The Tempest’ a film by Julie Taymor.

‘The Tempest’ is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s final masterpiece. It setting is that of a mystical and magical fantasy land. A sorceress Prospera is exiled to a magical island where she creates a tempest to create a storm that shipwrecks her enemies, so she can take revenge.
In Julie Taymor’s modern version of ‘The Tempest,’ the main character is not a man like in Shakespeare’s original, but a woman Prospera played by Helen Mirren. The setting is during the 16th and 17th centuries where women practicing alchemy were often convicted of being witches and exiled or killed. The main character Prospera is sent off with her four-year daughter on a ship to a deserted island and she takes on the role of the father figure to the child which creates a twist. She brings the King of Naples and others by shipwreck to the island which leads to an intellectual struggle for power.
